Offensive Line

Brandon Brooks (G): The Kansas City Chiefs have bodies, but few solutions at guard. Brandon Brooks has the size and mobility that Reid craves in a guard so he can easily be plugged into the Chiefs’ zone-blocking system. Even with Jeff Allen re-signed, the Chiefs could benefit from a third option to compete for the starting spot at right guard.

Brooks’ strength and agility would make him a darkhorse for the job if signed. Brooks is also adept in pass protection and would give Alex Smith time he hasn’t been used to on the right side of the offensive line interior.

Joe Barksdale (T): With Jah Reid returning to the fold, the Chiefs aren’t in a dire situation at right tackle. He’s a competent football player, but hardly settles the position. Barksdale will be one of the five best free agents available at his position. He might be the most balanced right tackle available in this free agent class, as he’s adept in the run game and as a pass protector.

Barksdale ranked as Pro Football Focus’ 15th-best tackle in the NFL last year. Adding him solidifies the far right side of the Chiefs’ line even without an upgrade at right guard.

Tight End

Jared Cook (TE): Cook’s been a serviceable tight end in his seven seasons in the NFL. Despite rare athleticism, he hasn’t exactly produced like teams expected him to when he entered the league. He’s never had more than 52 catches in a single season, but he averages right around 500 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns per season (on his career).

A few weeks ago the Chiefs extended Demetrius Harris, but his progress hasn’t merited comfort as the team’s No. 2 tight end. Signing Cook would give the Chiefs an excellent set of tight ends with real pass-catching talent and give Alex Smith another athletic option in the passing game.
