The Kansas City Chiefs and All-Pro safety Eric Berry are reportedly stalling in contract talks.
The Chiefs have until March 1 to get a long-term deal done with Eric Berry before it is time to make a decision. March 1 is the deadline to slap the franchise tag on a player, and should general manager John Dorsey and Berry’s representation not have a deal, Dorsey might be forced to apply the $10.6 million tag.
Apparently, the two sides have not been making much progress to this point, although the NFL Scouting Combine is when much of the offseason negotiations get done.
It would be stunning if the Chiefs don’t keep Berry one way or the other. The problem with tagging Berry is the 2016 cap hit. Kansas City needs to sign a litany of players and tagging Berry takes out $10.6 million. If he signs a long-term deal, the cap hit in 2016 is likely $3 million. Obviously, this is a major difference.
