Happy Hump Day, Chiefs Kingdom!

The NFL season has officially closed curtains until August but teams including our beloved Kansas City Chiefs are hard at work preparing for next season. This is always a dark period for a lot of football fans as the wait for their team’s can be a long and burdensome.

Football widows collectively rejoice as their husbands return back to regular form and Sundays are turned back into project days (sigh). Where you once were uncovering strategy on how your team would tackle this week’s opponent, you now are game planning on how to finally get your garage cleaned out and organized. Visits to the stadium are now visits to Home Depot and the yard is your new playing field.

We can and will once again find a way to survive this treacherous offseason.

Rumors at Arrowhead

Eric Berry is reportedly in talks with Kansas City on a new deal which is good to hear. Berry has become an iconic player for the Chiefs and the fans have embraced him one of the favorites on the team. Emotionally, the team and the fans formed an even tighter bond with Berry after his victorious battle with cancer.

Berry had remarkably one of his best seasons shortly after overcoming Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and all signs point that he will continue to improve as he’s entering his prime. What would be a fair contract though? As much as we love the player it is a business at the end of the day.

As it stands now, Berry’s contract that just ended had him as the fourth highest paid safety in the league. Fans will argue where he ranks in the league among safeties but it’s safe to say he deserves to be a nominee for a top five paid safety in the league. What’s interesting is Kam Chancellor who many would argue is better than Berry took a team friendly contract and is currently sitting as the eighth highest paid safety in the league. Do you think Berry will take a home town discount to stay with his Chiefs family?

The only other player reportedly in talks with Kansas City is defensive tackle Jaye Howard who began contract with Chiefs in November per Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star.

Howard and Ron Parker were  two steals Kansas City received from the Seahawks when they were waived. The agent recently told the Kansas City reporter that the team maintained “solid dialogue” with him in what’s described as a “fluid”situation to remain with the club.

Interestingly enough there’s really been no reports on the Chiefs and Sean Smith talking which may point toward Kansas City  parting ways with the young talent receiver. This would put pressure on Kansas City to fill that position again through the draft or free agency as having Philip Gaines to hold down one of the sides of the field could be risky.

With looking at how Denver built their defense having a lot of depth at the corner back position it will more than likely have other teams including the Chiefs trying to mimic the same approach.
