Buffalo Bills:  The Bills defensive star Marcell Dareus suffered a broken foot at the end of the season.  Obviously this won’t affect much as it is the end of the year.  What might affect things, though, is that Dareus continues to be less than optimistic when it comes to Head Coach Rex Ryan openly to the media.

Carolina Panthers:  The Panthers defense suffered a big blow as veteran defensive back Charles Tillman went down with a torn ACL.  This will put the Panthers under a lot of pressure with an NFC group that has some very dangerous teams.

Cleveland Browns:  The first order of business for the incoming leadership for the Browns will be to deal with quarterback Johnny Manziel who apparently blew off NFL concussion protocols to go have a night out in Las Vegas.  That attitude from Manziel has clearly not sat well with some key players, most notably tackle Joe Thomas who made a vague, yet clear, statement regarding the young quarterback.  Thomas has also indicated that he intends to ask for his release or trade from Cleveland if the incoming Head Coach and General Manager are not to his liking.

Denver Broncos:  The Peyton Manning Era has begun in Denver…after having briefly been usurped by the Brock Osweiler Era.  Despite openly and emphatically endorsing Brock Osweiler as their starter just a couple weeks ago, the Broncos have decided that they will go back to Manning for the playoffs.

  • Chiefs’ take: The Broncos quarterback situation is completely up in the air right now, and that’s great news for the Chiefs Super Bowl chances if they can get by Houston this week.

Detroit Lions:  Wide receiver Calvin Johnson is apparently contemplating retirement.  Despite still being one of the most dominant players in football, the 31 year old Johnson may indeed decide that he is done with the NFL.

Author’s take

: This is an interesting trend we’re starting to see in the NFL as players are retiring “early”.  There is tons of speculation on why this is, but even more curious is whether or not it will continue/hold.  To hear most of the older retired veterans talk about it, they miss the game immensely.  So will a guy that knows he can still play be able to resist the urge to come back?
