72. Chiefs beat Raiders on Hail Mary (1997)

It’s always fun to beat the Oakland Raiders. It is even better when the Raiders lose in ridiculous fashion. Add it happening at their stadium, and in front of the Black Hole, and it doesn’t get any sweeter. After losing in Week 1 of the 1997 season, the Kansas City Chiefs traveled to Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum to play on Monday Night Football, hoping to find their first win of the campaign. However, the Chiefs fell behind late and trailed by five points in the waning moments.

With 10 seconds left, Kansas City quarterback Elvis Grbac fired a 32-yard Hail Mary into the end zone and found receiver Andre Rison for the score, putting the Chiefs ahead 28-27. It was epic and hilarious, and it launched a 13-3 season and an eventual AFC West title. It was one of the more incredible endings in franchise history. It was typical of the era, when the Chiefs seemed to beat the Raiders under any circumstances. It sent both teams in opposite directions the rest of the year.
