In the aftermath of the 2000 season, the Kansas City Chiefs were looking for answers. The previous two seasons had been under the watchful eye of head coach Gunther Cunningham, who had been promoted from defensive coordinator after Marty Schottenheimer quit. Cunningham was known for his passion but could not get the team back to the playoffs in his two seasons and was fired, making way for Dick Vermeil.

Vermeil had retired from coaching following the 1999-2000 season, when he led the St. Louis Rams to a storybook season and their first Super Bowl title. However, Vermeil had the itch again and decided to go three hours west, taking on the Chiefs. Vermeil would not deliver a playoff win but became a beloved figure with the franchise and did guide it to a playoff appearance and AFC West title in 2003.

Vermeil would go on to retire in 2005 off a 10-6 season that saw Kansas City fall just short of the playoffs, via a tiebreaker with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh went on to win the Super Bowl.
