Through the years, the Kansas City Chiefs have many memorable nights on Monday Night Football, particularly in some wild matchups against division foes. One of those great memories came against the San Diego Chargers in 1995 where a kick returner would unleash some Monday night magic.

On Oct. 9, 1995 the Chiefs had a date in Kansas City with the San Diego Chargers. Both teams had winning records heading into the big Week 5 matchup with both teams were in a fight for the division.

This game was tightly contested with a total of five lead changes. The Chiefs were trailing late in the game, but Steve Bono engineered a late drive to tie the game with 18 seconds left in regulation, forcing overtime.

In the extra session, the Chargers and Chiefs both failed to score with their first possessions. On San Diego’s second possession it would be stiffed by Kansas City’s defense forcing a three and out and another punt. The Chargers would never see the ball again. Rookie wide receiver Tamarick Vanover fielded the punt and made one of the most exciting plays in Chiefs history returning it 87 yards for a touchdown to win the game.
