NFL power rankings: Chiefs continue surge

The Kansas City Chiefs looked like they were headed for a top-five pick in the 2016 NFL Draft after six weeks. It seemed like a lost campaign for a team that has mostly been lost over the past 15 years.

Then, suddenly and incredibly, the Chiefs decided to make their move. Like a sleeper horse at the Kentucky Derby, this group found the rail and began to charge, moving from the back of the pack to the front of the gaggle. Of course, the final turn remains before the playoffs, and as we have learned, five games can certainly make all the difference.

Nationally, the Chiefs are beginning to get some serious recognition. It is impossible to ignore Kansas City at this point, perhaps the hottest team in football not named the Carolina Panthers. Despite being 6-5 overall, it is a group that absolutely nobody would want to face in the playoffs.

Let’s see where the Chiefs sit in NFL power rankings:

NFL.com – 10

"Who looks more unbeatable than the Chiefs right now? The Panthers? OK. Who else? While we’re at it, who will beat Kansas City now or in the near future? Take a gander at the Chiefs’ upcoming schedule."

Washington Post – 7

"Andy Reid has done a terrific coaching job getting the Chiefs to rebound from their 1-5 start and overcome the loss of Jamaal Charles to a season-ending knee injury. WR Jeremy Maclin is having, relatively quietly, a productive season with 57 catches for 772 yards and three touchdowns."

Yahoo – 7

"The Chiefs dodged a bullet because Justin Houston’s knee injury doesn’t appear to be season ending, according to the Kansas City Star. Houston should be back by the playoffs, at least. And, they’re likely going to the playoffs."

USA Today – 10

"The next time they meet a team with a winning record will be in the playoffs … or at some point next season."
