Chiefs getting healthier on defense

On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs were missing four players at practice. On Thursday, we are down to two. While we already know that left guard Ben Grubbs will miss another game, Allen Bailey also remains out of practice with a calf injury.

However, the Chiefs did welcome both cornerback Sean Smith and outside linebacker Tamba Hali back into the fold. Kansas City should be thrilled with Smith coming back so quickly, as he will be needed against Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers. Hali was expected back, considering he was just getting a day off on Wednesday.

The Chiefs have been absolutely rolling on defense over the last five weeks, not allowing more than 18 points. Kansas City will need to continue that trend if it wants to reach the playoffs for the second time in three years. The offense has been mediocre at best and with Jamaal Charles out for the season, it is tough to see anything changing. Alex Smith can win games when surrounded by good play, but he’s not going to drive the bus.

The cornerback duo of Smith and Marcus Peters should be devastating against San Diego, which is without both Malcom Floyd and Keenan Allen on the outside. The main weapons will be Antonio Gates and Steve Johnson.
