NFL power rankings: Chiefs trending down

The Kansas City Chiefs looked awful on Monday night against the Green Bay Packers, dropping their record to 1-2. After losing consecutive primetime games in spectacular fashion, you are bound to take a hit in the eyes of John Q. Public.

Earlier on Arrowhead Addict, Ben Almquist gave us his power rankings through the first three weeks of the National Football League season and put the Chiefs at 16th, directly behind the New York Jets and ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles and San Diego Chargers. Almquist’s rankings are solid, although personally I would still put the Chiefs ahead of the Indianapolis Colts, who have looked absolutely dreadful. Kansas City should be 2-1. Indianapolis should be 0-3.

With all that being said, let us take a look at the NFL power rankings from across the country and then recap:

"For the second week in a row, the Kansas City Chiefs embarrassed themselves on primetime television. Coming off a five-turnover outing against the Denver Broncos, in which they lost in soul-crushing fashion, the Chiefs were throttled on the road by the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay absolutely torched what was expected to be one of the league’s better defenses, and jumped out to a 31-7 lead by the end of the third quarter."

"So … For most of Monday night, Chiefs at Packers really was a rematch of Super Bowl I. Ugh. The Kansas City pass rush actually did pressure Aaron Rodgers at times; unfortunately, the Chiefs’ secondary was letting receivers run around like club kids with backpacks and glowsticks. On the plus side, the Chiefs made a push at the end and actually produced a wide receiver touchdown! My goodness, was that the most tired stat in sports … Now we can all watch K.C. games in peace."

ESPN.com: 12

"Alex Smith has a Total QBR of 22.8 to start the season. The only quarterback who has been worse this season is Jimmy Clausen (8.9)."

USA Today: 19

"At least they don’t have to talk about their wide receivers’ touchdown drought any more."

Yahoo Sports: 14

"At the end of the first half, the Chiefs called a Hail Mary pass. Instead of throwing it deep and risking a turnover — again, it was the last play of the half — Alex Smith scrambled for a few utterly meaningless yards as time ran out. Nothing sums up Smith and the Chiefs’ insanely conservative offense better than that play."

I’m actually surprised at how high Kansas City is for the most part. However, the rankings by USA Today are outrageous. If the Chiefs played the New York Giants or St. Louis Rams, they would pound them. Both teams are ranked ahead of Kansas City. Also, the San Diego Chargers can’t be ranked in front of the Chiefs. The Chargers were blown out by the Minnesota Vikings, not the Green Bay Packers. Big difference.
