Maclin’s addition to this offense can’t be overstated. While five catches for 52 yards isn’t a great game by anyone’s standards for an elite receiver, he showed his effectiveness in other ways. Alex Smith was taking multiple shots down field throughout the game and barely missed a long touchdown to Maclin in the second half. Those plays will add up down the road. Defenses that play the Chiefs will not be able to stack the box against Charles like they have in the past.
While – statistically speaking – Maclin didn’t have a great game, he made a huge impact. Last season when the Chiefs lined up they faced tight coverage on the outside on most snaps. This season Houston played off-coverage consistently giving the Chiefs wideouts and Maclin more than an 8-yard cushion. While defensive scheme can dictate off-coverage, the Chiefs receivers have speed, depth, and are a threat this year.
In addition, Kelce looked fantastic against the Texans. Six catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns helps make his case for being an elite tight end heading into his third season. With his size and speed defenses will have to game plan ways to stop him, opening up other options.
Kelce’s first touchdown came against a corner and was a good throw by Smith. Alex threw the ball high where only Kelce had a chance to come down with it. Kelce’s second touchdown was a blown coverage as he didn’t have a defender within at least six yards when he caught the pass. He then headed up field untouched for a 42-yard score.
