The third key defensive player to return was Eric Berry and how wonderful it was to see such an inspiring figure back on the field? Berry had a much bigger fight than just offseason preparations this summer, but to overcome all odds and be ready for Week 1 is a tremendous achievement and a testament to the man one of the keys of the Chiefs’ defense. While Berry only played limited snaps, he was able to record two tackles and one pass defended. Berry’s impact may well be more significant later in the season, if he is able to play regularly at his Pro Bowl form.

The most exciting players to follow on Sunday, however, were the fortunes of new additions wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and first-round draft pick Marcus Peters. Maclin and Smith continued to show their newly built chemistry, as he was found for five receptions off nine targets for 52 yards.

There was also a lovely deep throw down the sideline that Maclin had adjudged to have caught, but under review was deemed incomplete which glimpsed at the growing connection between Smith and his main receiver. The noticeable difference between Maclin and Bowe, the Chiefs’ leading wide receiver last season, is the ability to gain separation.

Maclin’s route-running is terrific, and his speed and quickness make him difficult to cover, especially when in man-to-man defense. Although he was unable to catch that ever elusive touchdown, Smith and Maclin connected well throughout the game and look good heading into the home opener against Denver.
