Chiefs roster moves: Sunday’s transactions

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey has been busy on Sunday morning. Dorsey was able to retain a pair of receivers in rookie Da’Ron Brown and preseason superstar Fred Williams, by putting them on the practice squad, according to Herbie Teope of Chiefs Digest and the Topeka Capital-Journal. Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle also has Kansas City keeping Jarrod Pughsley.

Dorsey also claimed tight end Ryan Parker off waivers, who was cut by the San Diego Chargers on Saturday, per Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star. To make room for Parker on the active 53-man roster, outside linebacker Dezman Moses was waived.

In the meantime, center Eric Kush and inside linebacker James-Michael Johnson will not be returning to Kansas City, with both being claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

So who is Parker? Parker is a 6-foot-4, 260-pound tight end who comes from the University of Albany (NY).

The Chiefs have apparently been after Parker since he went undrafted back in May, according to Sal Maiorana of the Democrat & Chronicle.

"Parker said several teams kicked his tires including the Chargers, Chiefs, Cowboys, Eagles, Vikings, Browns, and Giants. At one point Saturday, he thought Dallas was going to take him, but it opted for Geoff Swaim from Texas in the seventh round. “The final options were San Diego, Dallas, and the Giants, and once Dallas drafted one, San Diego stood out ahead of the Giants,” said Parker, who will be coached by former Bills tight end Pete Metzelaars in an offense that is coordinated by former Bills quarterback Frank Reich."

So, Parker didn’t have much interest in Kansas City at the time. Now, he’s probably pretty happy about going to the Chiefs. Parker did say he chose San Diego because Antonio Gates is getting older, and he felt he could compete with the incumbents such as Lardarius Green. However, the Chargers kept three tight ends besides the suspended Gates, and Parker couldn’t make the team. With Parker, he is going on the 53-man roster.

Does that mean Demetrius Harris gets put on the Physically Unable to Perform list, or are the Chiefs looking to carry four tight ends?

Another signing: The Chiefs have added offensive tackle Jah Reid, who was cut by the Baltimore Ravens. Reid is massive at 6-foot-7 and 325 pounds.

Stay tuned.
