For starters, the Chiefs have had more faith in Hammond previously. Both Hammond and Williams were signed as free agents in 2013. But where Williams has never played outside of the preseason, Hammond was on the 53 man roster last season, and participated in all 16 games. Hammond is also currently listed as one of the top six receivers on the Chiefs depth chart.

Brown has the same advantage on the depth chart (he and Hammond are each listed in a “Third” spot while Williams is in the “Other” category). Since Brown is a rookie, he does not have the playing experience that Hammond does. However,  he was actually drafted by K.C., so the franchise may have more of an interest in developing him as opposed to Williams.

And then there is age. Williams is the oldest of the group at 27. Not ancient, but a potential concern if you have to take time to continue developing him. In contrast, Hammond is 25 and Brown will turn 24 in October.

None of those odds are insurmountable for Williams. If his play is good enough in practice and the remaining preseason games, then he has every ability to play on Sundays.

But this is his third year with the organization. He will be playing with the same quarterbacks, and under the same coach, as each previous year. If he did not show enough to make it onto the field in the regular season last year, I am not holding my breath to see him out there this season.

Go Chiefs!!!
