ILB Justin March

Without fail, every year an undrafted player makes a splash in training camp for the Chiefs. Last year, it was Albert Wilson; this year, it’s ILB Justin March. According to Chiefs’ beat writers, March has had a strong camp. That trend continued in the Week 1 preseason game with Arizona. March was the second-leading tackler for Kansas City, making four stops on the night. One of those tackles came in a 3rd-and-short situation where March quickly filled an open hole and prevented a conversion by the Cardinals.

March is a bit undersized at his listed 230-pound playing weight, but the reports suggest he’s playing closer to 240 at this stage of the offseason. His instincts and play recognition have served him well thus far and could help him push Mauga for playing time as he gains more live game experience. The unexpected battle between he and Wilson should heat up with three preseason games left before the team’s regular season opener with the Houston Texans. Kansas City needs to be much stronger at the second level if they hope to push the Denver Broncos, a team who’ll feature more of their ground game in 2015, for the division title.

John Dorsey and his staff have done an extraordinary job of acquiring talent since coming to Kansas City. The 2015 Chiefs have respectable depth and stiff competition at a number of positions. It’s an exciting time when so many of those players are under 25 and still ascending. With a handful of expiring contracts due over the next two seasons, it’s important to have competent, inexpensive talent up and down the roster.
