Chiefs preseason: Don’t be That Guy

facebooktwitterreddit

On Saturday night, the Kansas City Chiefs open up their preseason against the Arizona Cardinals. This is the first time we have see Kansas City in a game since December, when it knocked the San Diego Chargers out of the postseason race. There is a ton of excitement for this group, and rightfully so.

However, excitement can be a dangerous thing. When excitement meets the preseason, and a team does not play perfect football, Preseason Guy comes out. Nobody is more annoying than Preseason Guy.

Preseason Guy is the fan who sees Alex Smith throw an incompletion and immediately declared that John Dorsey is an idiot for not trading half the roster to move up and take Jameis Winston. This is also the guy who sees Eric Fisher allow a pressure and screams that the season is lost because Fisher is the worst left tackle of all-time.

On the flip side, when things go well, Preseason Guy exults in triumph like a drunken sailor who sees land. He yells from the rooftops after an opening touchdown that the Chiefs are destined for a perfect season. He lets everyone know that Kansas City is nothing short of an unstoppable juggernaut.

Look, the reality is that this game means nothing. We already know who the Chiefs are. This is a good to very good football team with an elite defense and a truckload of speed on offense. Even with Jeremy Maclin, Kansas City will be a run-first team that utilizes the west coast offense.

The main thing on Saturday is that all the starters escape without an injury. In fact, the only way this game matters come Sept. 13 is if the Chiefs lose somebody for that game. If Kansas City loses 49-0 but everyone is healthy, then it might as well be 1-0, because it is a victory.

Don’t forget, so much of winning and losing happens during the week. Teams endlessly prepare to attack the weaknesses of the other. Believe me, Bruce Arians and Andy Reid are not preparing for each other. They are worried about not showing anything and making sure their respective teams are prepared.

Enjoy the game tonight, folks. But remember, don’t be Preseason Guy.
