Chiefs’ starters to play first quarter vs. Cardinals

After training camp practice on Wednesday morning, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid talked to a gaggle of reporters and told the scrum that the starters will be playing the entire first quarter, according to Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star.

This should give each side of the ball only a little bit of work, hoping to avoid injury but stay sharp. If the offense looks really good in the first series, it would not be surprising to see Reid yank that group and keep their confidence at peak levels. Defensively, I would expect a couple of series.

It will be interesting to see who starts at the second wide receiver spot. Albert Wilson is the start opposite Jeremy Maclin but he has a throat illness, holding him out of practice on Wednesday after leaving early on Tuesday. If Wilson can’t play, will it be third-round rookie Chris Conley or Frankie Hammond Jr. on the outside?

Defensively, we should be watching the inside linebackers. Josh Mauga was forced to leave practice with a heel injury, so it would be surprising if he sees any time on Saturday. With Mauga likely down for the contest, and D.J. Alexander also out with a high ankle sprain, who will start alongside Derrick Johnson.

Fourth-round pick Ramik Wilson would seem the obvious choice on paper, but Justin March has been nothing short of spectacular in training camp as an undrafted rookie free-agent out of the University of Akron. This could be a rotation with both getting a chance to play against the Cardinals’ starters.
