The Defensive Backfield

The Chiefs have a secondary that is coming into its own.  They have the personnel to be come elite. Sean Smith and Eric Berry have Pro Bowl-potential in 2015. Ron Parker has the chance to become a premiere deep safety.  The young cornerbacks the have skills to excel in Sutton’s system. Finally, there is a lot of quality depth, particularly at safety.

At safety, Kansas City is set with Berry, Parker, Husain Abdullah and Tyvon Branch. That is a very solid depth chart.  The remaining players in Kelcie McCray, Daniel Sorenson and Sanders Commings are likely fighting for their chance to stay with the team.

With the four safeties and five cornerbacks virtually set, the 10th defensive back slot on this roster will be competitive. The advantage will likely be to the player with versatility. Commings is listed at the safety.  We’ve seen him taking reps with the corners, however.  McCray and Sorenson cannot say that and it gives Commings an edge on making the roster.  As always with Commings, he’ll need to stay healthy and play well on his special teams assignments.
