San Francisco 49ers: WTF?!!!! Listen, I don’t care what you think about the Niners, you have to kind of feel sorry for them this year. I don’t know what’s going on, but if you are a quality NFL player, apparently San Francisco is not the place for you. I mean, everyone was either let go or retired. Do they even have 53 players on their roster? Can they just forfeit? For an organization that seemed destined to be at the top for years to come, SF has fallen apart pretty quickly…pretty much ever since they got rid of that Alex Smith guy (FREE HOT TAKES!!!!).
Seattle Seahawks: Will the Seahawks pay Russell Wilson? Maybe the toughest football personnel decision I can recall in recent years. Do the Hawks win a Super Bowl without Wilson? Well, the other option was Matt Flynn…so, probably not. Conversely, does Russell Wilson lead a less talented team to the Super Bowl? His numbers are pretty mediocre…so, probably not. Tough place to be when you’re talking about $20+ million per year.
St. Louis Rams: Can Jeff Fisher fix this offense? The Rams defense is legit. The offense seems to have promise every year that it just can’t deliver on. Jeff Fisher sent the injury prone and oft ineffective Sam Bradford to Philadelphia in exchange for the injury prone and oft ineffective Nick Foles. And while the Rams have invested heavily in the offensive line, the best wide receiver in St Louis is still Torry Holt…who hasn’t played in the NFL since 2009.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Is Jameis Winston the savior? There is no doubt that the future of this franchise hinges on Winston. The Bucs have made no bones about it. They were prepping this young man to take over the second he declared for the draft. Not many people question his talent, but his ability to stay out of TMZ and other tabloids? That’s definitely up for debate.
We always hear about what teams give up to go get their quarterback…but this time it was what the team gave up to stay put and take their quarterback. Mandatory Credit: Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports
Tennessee Titans: Was Mariota the right choice? We’ve been hearing rumors and reports about what teams were offering for the #2 overall pick, and I have to say, I would’ve taken a number of the offers. The Eagles in particular seemed ready to sell the farm with a number of quality players in addition to picks. Bold move by the Titans to take the rookie from Oregon instead.
Washington Redskins: What is the next chapter in the RGIII saga? What was once considered the best quarterback situation in the NFL has turned into a nightmare. The Skins had RGIII and Kirk Cousins, two highly touted young quarterbacks that the entire league wanted. Rather than move either player to acquire more pieces, Washington sat on both players. Then Griffin fell to pieces, and it was soon after discovered that Cousins was not as billed. Now they have two quarterbacks that nobody wants…except Dan Snyder who still remembers how much it cost him to make that move for RGIII.
Well that’s going to do it for me. For those of you that were looking for the normal mix of headlines, I’ll be combining the two weeks in next Friday’s edition…so just hold your horses.
