The last option that could provide a boost to Kansas City would be adding another veteran inside linebacker. Brandon Spikes is currently a free agent after his arrest earlier this offseason in which he pleaded guilty for a hit and run accident. Spikes could come in and start next to Derrick Johnson and would provide a big upgrade over Josh Mauga, especially against the run. Spikes will be looking to sign a deal to play this year and get paid again going into the 2016 league year. Offering Spikes a one year deal with incentives that could reach $1.5 million could make the Chiefs defense extremely difficult to play against this season.

The option I would like to see the Chiefs pursue would be using the money freed up to try and lock up Dontari Poe either before the season or during the season. Poe will be looking for a large contract when he becomes a free agent in 2017 and signing him with a year left on his contract could allow the Chiefs the ability to sign him for much less than he will command after the 2016 season. Signing Poe to a deal that would be a four or five-year extension with a $30 million signing bonus would allow them to spread the bonus out over the life of the contract. This would keep his cap number smaller over the next two years as he is already on the books for just over $6 million in 2016.

Other expiring contracts include Eric Berry, Tamba Hali, and Johnson on the defensive side of the ball. Berry is actually in a position to help create even more room as it is possible with his situation that he would be in a better position to sign an extension for another year and spread his current contract over two years. If he is unable to play in 2015 that could allow him to still be paid as that is not a requirement while on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list. Signing an extension would allow him to play in 2016 and eliminate any questions about his health and ability to return from Hodgkin Lymphoma.

What do you think, Addicts? Where would you like to see the Chiefs spend their available salary cap?
