We often treat football and the Kansas City Chiefs as a life-or-death experience. In reality, we are talking about a game. All of this came into painful focus last year when safety Eric Berry was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma, putting his personal and professional future into doubt.

On Tuesday, we all received the good news that Berry is recovering well from his illness. Eric’s brother, Evan, told reporters in Knoxville, Tenn., that the All-Pro is powering through, according to Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star.

"“He’s doing really good,” Evan Berry told reporters. “I think he has three more treatments left. To be honest, I don’t really see it affecting him. He’s a very strong person, and he’s continued to keep strong.”"

Evan continued, talking about Eric’s spirit following the diagnosis.

"“It was scary,” Berry said. “But he wasn’t worried, so I wasn’t worried.”"

Berry is under contract with the Chiefs through 2015 before becoming an unrestricted free agent. Since being drafted fifth overall in the 2010 NFL Draft, Berry has made three Pro Bowls and a First-Team All-Pro once.

Let’s all hope for a speedy recovery for Berry, who seems hellbent on beating this terrible disease.
