The Surprise Gift That Made Your Day (Staunch Scoring Defense )

Through all the ups and downs this year, there has been a running debate about where most of the blame for lackluster performances should fall. The Chiefs defense has generally earned its way out of being part of this conversation.

This has been with good reason, as profootballreference.com lists the Chiefs as having the second best passing defense, and third best overall defense in the league. Unfortunately, the rushing defense has not been able to keep pace, and opposing teams have spent more than their fair share of time moving the ball into Kansas City territory.

However, when an opponent gets inside the red zone, they rarely come away with a touchdown. According to teamrankings.com, the Chiefs lead the league in red zone defense, allowing a touchdown on only 38% of opponent drives that get inside the 20 yard line. No other team has less than 42%.

Two other statistics worth noting:

  • The Chiefs have allowed only 18.3 points per game. That is third lowest in the league, behind only Seattle and Detroit.
  • The Chiefs are the only team in the NFL that has held every opponent they have faced to less than 30 points.

At no point in this season have I looked at a  bad performance and thought, “This one is on the defense.”

Considering the notable absences of Eric Berry, Derrick Johnson, and Mike Devito, this kind of production is far beyond anything we could have asked for.

Go CHIEFS!!!!!!!
