Inactives: Chiefs Won’t Have To Face Julius Thomas Or Aqib Talib
By Ben Nielsen
The Denver Broncos will be missing three key pieces tonight agains the Kansas City Chiefs.
Tight end Julius Thomas, cornerback Aqib Talib, and running back Montee Ball. All three are out due to injury. Backup running back Ronnie Hillman is also out for the Broncos.
Thomas’ absence is probably the biggest blow to the Broncos as this will allow the Chiefs to put more emphasis on covering Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas. Jacob Tamme is a decent red zone option at tight end but he can’t stretch the field the way Julius can for the Broncos.
As for the Chiefs, Donnie Avery will return to the lineup for the first time since having surgery on his groin before the bye week. Kansas City has missed his speed on the outside as A.J. Jenkins and Frankie Hammond struggled mightily to fill his spot during his absence.
Jason Avant will also make his debut for the Chiefs but we don’t know how much he’ll play. On one hand he’s very familiar with Andy Reid’s offense but he also doesn’t have much of a report with Alex Smith. It’ll be interesting to monitor his snaps tonight.
More good news includes cornerback Chris Owens, he’ll be active for the first time since the Buffalo Bills game. The combination of Owens and Philip Gaines should allow Ron Parker to go back to safety to replace Eric Berry. Parker is much better suited to play safety than cornerback in the Chiefs’ defensive scheme.
The Chiefs will be without Junior Hemingway and Jamel Fleming tonight. Both of those players were not expected to play tonight anyway. The rest of the inactives feature the usual in Aaron Murray, Eric Kush, and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. Newcomers Philip Supernaw and Nick Williams are also inactive.
