Joe Mays Is Eligible To Return To Practice This Week

Remember Joe Mays? The middle linebacker we signed to help be a run-stopping force before he and Derrick Johnson each went down with injuries? Well, he’s eligible to return to the practice field today.

Mays had surgery on his wrist back in August after damaging a ligament in a game against the Carolina Panthers. He was placed on the injured reserve list with a designation to return. Players on said list may return to practice after spending at least six weeks on the IR and may return to game action after at least eight weeks.

Now that the bye week is completed, Mays can return to practice this week if the Chiefs deem him fit enough to do so. At this stage there is no indication either way if he’ll practice this week or not.

Kansas City desperately needs some linebacker help against the run after losing Mays, Mike DeVito, and Derrick Johnson to injuries. Those three players may be the Chiefs best run-stopping defenders if you don’t count Dontari Poe (which maybe you should). Getting Mays back in the lineup would help Kansas City against more physical run teams plus push either Josh Mauga or James Michael-Johnson back into reserve roles where they can be more effective plus help out on special teams.

The first injury report does not come out until Wednesday but we’ll keep you updated if something is announced before then.
