Donnie Avery apparently tore all of the things, and as a result will be out for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Here is what Chiefs head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder told the media today:
"“Basically, what happened on that play is he kind of did a one-sided split and got his body into extension,” said head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder. “So (with) that injury, what happens is your abductor group or groin muscles either strain or tear and then you get some pulling away of your abdominal muscles. Those things generally need to be fixed.”"
Yeah, I’d say those things do indeed ‘generally need to be fixed.’ The timetable for Avery’s return is unknown but he should benefit from having the bye next week to rest and recover. Generally such injuries will knock a player out for four weeks, which means Avery could be out for San Francisco, on the road at San Diego, and at home against the St. Louis Rams.
Starting in his place will be A.J. Jenkins, whose speed should play well in Avery’s position. And what a time to get a start, eh? Jenkins was the first round pick of the 49ers in 2012 but never saw the field and was inactive for the majority of the season. The next sumer San Francisco traded him to Kansas City for the Chiefs failed first round pick Jon Baldwin. Baldwin was cut by the 49ers before the start of the season.
With the potential return of De’Anthony Thomas this week and now a healthy backfield of Knile Davis and Jamaal Charles, there shouldn’t be too much pressure on Jenkins to produce at a high level. His speed should play well with Thomas and Charles, especially on underneath routes and screens. San Francisco, even though they are decimated by injuries, is still one of the better defensive teams in the league so Jenkins at least to be what Avery has been these first four weeks.
