Won a spot: RB Cyrus Gray

I’ve never been a huge fan of Gray. Since being drafted by the Chiefs in 2011, he’s always seemed to me to be a jack of all trades, master of none. The Chiefs top two backs both have home run speed plus their own advantageous attributes — size and mass for Knile Davis and elite elusiveness for Jamaal Charles. Gray is not much above average in any specific area so it’s hard to outline a role for him where he will consistently excel. Nonetheless, he steadily performs well when given the chance, his instincts have improved and if by some disaster both Davis and Charles went down again, Gray is the guy I’d want to take the reins.

It will be interesting to see if the Chiefs try and stash away RB Joe McKnight somewhere somehow, because he also showed up big in this game 10 carries for 50 yards and a long touchdown pass that was called back by one of the Chiefs’ 14 penalties in the game. Still, the team isn’t going to cut RB DeAnthony Thomas to make room for him so it may have been too little too late for McKnight.
