2. The Secondary

This secondary looks like it came out of a horror movie. Defensive back Ron Parker had an excellent week 17 in 2013 and apparently (I wasn’t in St. Joe this summer. Brb crying.) had a great training camp. Jon Baldwin also had a great training camp and look where he ended up.

In Parker’s first preseason game he ended up covering Bengals’ wide receiver A.J. Green, who is widely touted as a top 5 receiver in the NFL. He got burnt for a 53 yard pass by the man with no soul, Bengals’ quarterback Andy Dalton. Meanwhile, defensive back Sean Smith came in with the second team and intercepted a Jason Campbell pass and returned it for a touchdown.

I have no bad things to say about defensive back Marcus Cooper. He played pretty well from what I saw.

Safety Eric Berry missed most of the preseason with tendonitis in his heel. Husain Abdullah did not seem to do anything of note. He is not fast, but is an upgrade over Kendrick Lewis. Sanders Commings got his ankle broken by running back Jamaal Charles in training camp which shattered my hopes of him being the savior at the free safety position for the Chiefs.

Newcomer Daniel Sorensen took over Eric Berry’s spot at strong safety and could be described as disgraceful at that position. Rookie Phillip Gaines, picked in the third round of this year’s draft also has some major work to do. On a side note, everyone on this secondary will struggle if the flags for illegal contact and defensive holding are thrown as many times as they were in the preseason.
