De’Anthony Thomas. Travis Kelce. Frankie Hammond. Knile Davis.
Kansas City’s offense is going to have to be more than just Jamaal Charles and a Prayer if they are going to steal some games against San Francisco, Seattle, and Denver. This is going to require some of the guys listed above to be able to create some big plays on their own. We’ve seen Thomas, Kelce, and Hammond come up with some big plays this preseason already but we haven’t seen them do it against first team competition.
Andy Reid’s philosophy is to spread the ball around to multiple targets. Some of his best seasons in Philadelphia featured teams that didn’t have star wide receivers but those receivers could create big plays when needed. Keeping the opposing defense on their toes and keeping them moving around can help open some things up for Charles and Dwayne Bowe. So do the Chiefs have enough targets to make that happen?
We’ve seen Thomas do some good things in the return game but how quickly is he catching on to the screen packages and lining up as an outside receiver? Can Travis Kelce runaway from first string safeties the way he does second string defensive backs? Can Frankie Hammond prove to be a player who can contribute regularly or is he a back of the roster type of player? Tonight doesn’t give us 100% of the answer but it does give us a big piece of the puzzle.
