DEFENSIVE BACKS
Corners: Marcus Cooper, Sean Smith, Chris Owens, Phillip Gaines, Ron Parker
Safeties: Eric Berry, Husain Abdullah, Daniel Sorensen, Malcom Bronson, Jerron McMillian
Practice Squad Prospects: DeMarcus Van Dyke
Ron Parker may be gone if the John Dorsey thinks he’s found the next Marcus Cooper on the waiver wire. There’s always the possibility – and maybe the more likely possibility – Parker is moved to safety and McMillian is cut if the Dorsey finds a corner he deems worthy of being signed. But at the very least Parker is proving he cannot handle being a started edge cornerback.
Chris Owens was everywhere on Sunday, wreaking havoc wherever he went. He brings a lot of the energy and edge the Chiefs may be looking for from their nickel corner though he does not necessarily fit the bill of a typical Dorsey defensive back. If Owens can hold the fort for the first eight weeks of the season and then split time with Phillip Gaines in the second half of the year then that would be an ideal situation.
Note: It should be noted Owens hurt his knee in practice yesterday. His status is unknown.
Daniel Sorensen hasn’t done anything to prove he doesn’t deserve a spot on this team, pure and simple. Kansas City is going to benefit tremendously from what he can do in the punt and kick coverage game. In only two games Sorensen has a special teams grade of +1.5 from PFF.
