Jaye Howard has really been impressive to me in these first two preseason games. Maybe that is because I didn’t expect anything from him, but he has shown some solid flashes of being able to disrupt the pocket on passing downs. In 29 pass rush attempts he has come up with four pressures. That 13.8-percent success rate isn’t bad considering Dontari Poe caused pressure in 4.9-percent of his snaps last season. Howard isn’t having to maintain that as a starter the way Poe is, but it gives you some kind of a idea of how Howard could be a valuable substitute in passing downs.
Mike Catapano needs to get healthy and on the field so I can see what kind of improvement he has made.
Vance Walker has taken the third most snaps of any defensive player this preseason and has accumulated a +1.9 pass rushing grade from PFF playing both left and right end. I’m interested to see when he finally gets some reps with the starters.
Allen Bailey has also had a good start to the preseason. He has five quarterback pressures in 27 pass rush attempts and is the only defensive linemen on the roster with positive PFF grade against the run.
