2014 Chiefs: Nine Reasons To Believe
By Laddie Morse
4. Travis Kelce is a TD Waiting to Happen
While the TE’s as a group are going to be very good, Travis Kelce is consistently showing he’s going to be a big time producer in this league and the Chiefs brass better start planning now to figure out how they’re going to pay this young man in 3 years from now because remember this is Kelce’s second season. Kelce’s athleticism is unquestionable and the pass he caught from rookie QB Aaron Murray was so sweet, that the novice Murray was caught trying to go back to the cookie jar too soon and got picked off. No, it wasn’t Kelce’s fault but it’s hard to blame Murray for wanting to light it up again. It was just too predictable and he got burned for it. That throw may even have cost Mr. Murray his future with the Chiefs.
Travis Kelce however, has a long and beautiful future with the Chiefs ahead of him and no one should doubt that he’ll be relied upon to come up big this year when coming up big is needed. You have to hope that someone holding the Chiefs offensive playcard during the games recognizes Travis Kelce should be starting every game and not just tagging along like some second rate second stringer.
When all-time great TE Tony Gonzales was a rookie he had 368 receiving yards. I think we can expect more than that from our young Mr. Kelce in his first full season. So far, in two preseason games he’s produced, 7 targets, 6 receptions, 136 yards and 2 TDs. It may be ridiculous to do this but, if you project that over a 16 game season he’d have, 56 targets, 48 receptions, 1,088 yards and 16 TDs. If he’s half that good this season… we’re all going to go Koo-Koo for Kelce.
5. The Chiefs Are Going to Cairo
The longer I watch the Chiefs field goal kicker competition… and the more Andy Reid says it’s still tied… the more I’m convinced that means rookie Cairo Santos will be the man. Some think that if the Chiefs kicker situation “ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it.” But that folksy formula doesn’t help change the Chiefs current kicker Ryan Succop from an ever so average kicker into a Top Ten banger. Cairo Santos can help the Chiefs this season and I believe he’ll be one of those big reasons that the Chiefs come out on top more than they don’t. You can sit back and argue that he’s just a rookie but so was every kicker before they became great and I believe Santos has greatness in his legs. Eleven days and we’ll find out… so stay tuned.
6. Eric Berry Will Rise Again
Injuries aside, our Mr. Eric Berry the Safety supreme, will redeem himself on opening day and help the Chiefs knock off their first opponent. Eric Berry is being held out because he has a recurring heel issue with tendonitis. Sounds serious right? Well, rest is the cure so I wouldn’t count on seeing Eric until the week of practice before the Titans game. Remember, Berry does not have a rupture or a tear in his tendon, just a sore tendon and that’s most common in runners who over do it or push themselves more than normal. Going from working out on his own… to busting his butt in training camp will do it every time. Now he gets paid for resting and I hope that’s exactly what he’s doing because his best is yet to come.
“Rest” assured, Mr. Berry will rise again.
