Only two more practices left in St. Joseph before the Chiefs pack up for Kansas City (with a trip to Carolina in between). Here are a few thoughts and notes on how today’s practice went.

1. Travis Kelce’s Big Day

Travis Kelce doesn’t seem to be satisfied with highlight touchdown reception from last week’s preseason opener. The second year tight end had a big day at practice which included a complete dismantling of Daniel Sorensen for an easy touchdown reception.

If the Chiefs don’t get a deal done with Alex Smith before his unknown deadline then Travis Kelce is going to raise Smith’s price by millions. Kelce is the kind of target Smith will excel with – an athletic big target who can attack the deep seam and cause havoc for linebackers and safeties. Chase Daniel experienced this Thursday night as he’ll never throw an easier 69-yard touchdown pass in his life. I’m still very interested to see how Kelce is used in the screen game.

Part of what Kelce is supposed to bring to the table is an aggressiveness in the blocking game – both in runs and screens. If the Chiefs can get situations where they have Dwayne Bowe, Kelce and an offensive linemen setting up a wall for De’Anthony Thomas and Jamaal Charles then KC’s screen game could almost become unbeatable. But we really haven’t seen Kelce do much in terms of blocking so that may be something to watch for this weekend.
