It would seem that the odd man out would invariably come down to Daniel or Bray as Murray would have the upside of playing in a pro style offense in Georgia and have a smaller salary cap hit that Daniel. Now should the Chiefs trade away a decent backup quarterback with two unknowns waiting in the wing? My gut actually says yes.
Think about this. If the Chiefs are able to get a 6th round pick for Daniel would that not, in the grand scheme of things, be worth it in the end? Don’t get me wrong having Daniel as the second in line is a safe choice. It’s safe to have him back there if Smith goes down during the season. However the flip side of that is does he have the right qualities to be a starter full time in the NFL? Perhaps he does, but more than likely no. Is he a good quarterback, yes. Does he have the potential to be good? However as said before is he the next step for the Kansas City Chiefs? No.
The prospect of keeping both Murray and Bray as the number 2 and number 3 respectively is a little unnerving to say the least. But is it the right decision for what happens after Smith leaves? Probably yes. The fact is no one really knows what is going through the heads of the coaches as they try to put together a great team and with the next few preseason games ahead up that quarterback race will only tighten.
