Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp: Stock Up, Stock Down
Stock Up: DeAnthony Thomas
Stock Down: Cyrus Gray
Entering training camp I wasn’t sure exactly what the Chiefs would have in store for DeAnthony Thomas as a rookie. I figured that Thomas was really only guaranteed to see action on special teams with his reps at both running back and wide receiver to be determined as the preseason went by. When I was at camp Saturday Thomas was already seeing reps with the first string offense. What was especially exciting was to see him on the field with Jamaal Charles at the same time. The first depth chart was released for the Bengals game this week and it had Thomas as the no. 3 RB over Gray. That’s a promising sign for Thomas and not very encouraging for Gray’s future with the Chiefs.
Thomas is as advertised in that he’s incredibly explosive. While I knocked Dressler for not looking like a NFL player, that’s not the case with DAT. While he is small, he’s much more powerful looking than Dressler. He looks like an NFL player, just a small one. It appears that KC may use DAT in more of a Danny Woodhead type role as opposed to a typical slot WR like some originally predicted. Regardless of what the role ends up being, it’s clear that KC has plans to put DAT’s unique skill set to use.
Cyrus Gray is a passable third RB. Most teams don’t have dynamic playmakers as their third option. So if Cyrus Gray was the third RB on the Chiefs roster, that would be fine. However, you only have to watch a few plays to see that there is a gap in playmaking ability between Jamaal Charles, Knile Davis, DAT and Cyrus Gray. The first three guys have special natural talents that can’t be taught or learned. So while Gray is a solid guy who probably belongs on a NFL roster somewhere, it may not be with the Chiefs this season. There is simply too much talent ahead of him at his position.
So what do you think Addicts? Who’s stock do you think is going up? Who’s stock is falling? Who are you most interested in seeing this Thursday night when they take the field for the first time? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
As always, thanks for reading and GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!
