3. Daniel Sorensen Has A Big Day
The door is wide open for Sorensen to make this team as a reserve safety after the injury to Sanders Commings and the lack of competition behind him. The BYU product came in with a solid resume as a special teams player and for his ability to get from side-to-side as a deep safety. He’s not necessarily known as a ball hawk but two picks today shouldn’t hurt his chances to make the team.
It should be noted the Chiefs fooled around with a package that involved Marcus Cooper and Sean Smith as the starting cornerbacks and Ron Parker as the deep safety. Dee Ford, Tamba Hali, and Justin Houston were also on the field during this time. It would seem as if the Chiefs’ decision to experiment with Parker at safety would suggest there isn’t a lot they’ve seen at the back end of the roster they like. But that’s reading into things a little bit.
By no means is he a lock to make the roster, he has to translate some of this practice performance to the preseason games, but one would think he’d be one of three or four safeties the Chiefs keep on the roster. Sorensen is the kind of player the Chiefs would like (and need) to make this team. He’s a quick learner, a solid tackler, and contribute in more than one way to the team. At BYU he was a playmaker on special teams so adding that kind of a weapon to the coverage teams would be useful to a group that’s losing guys like Cooper and Parker.
