I love training camp! I said it. I love it.
I love it for many reasons. I love it cause it means football is just right around the corner. I love it cause I get to read about what is happening in my teams camp. I love it because of the atmosphere it brings to fans worldwide. I love it for all these reasons and more.
However as training camp certain events can take place that can steal the very thunder of a fan base…”Injured during the play”.
This is the very thing I hate to read about when it comes to my Kansas City Chiefs and their pursuit of winning in the next season. Every year there can be season ending injuries to top stars that can truly make or break a season. I won’t dare say anything else for fear of the dreaded jynx that can occur, but the fear is behind every Chiefs fan.
Now that being said I truly don’t wish for skilled players to get injured, even Raiders players. Those players are out there doing something they love and see that dream they have be shattered by an injury I feel for that player. I may hate them when they are playing my team but I do feel for them.
Another woe of training camp is the fact that your favorite player may get cut or retire. An example for me was Sean McGrath.
John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports
I felt that he had a great potential and I enjoyed writing about him and seeing him play week after week. Now while I don’t agree with his decision to leave the game at a young age, I understand where he is coming from. He really did have the odds stacked against him and so he chose to leave the game on a high note after a decent season for seemingly unknown player.
This leads to the cuts that have to be made every year. That alone is a tense moment for players especially, but the fans as well. With the cuts that must be made the players you have been rooting for are gone. Cuts stink but they are apart of the experience that comes with training camp. They are necessary as the coaches work out the best group of players that gives them the best chance for the upcoming season.
All in all training camp has its ups and downs and with injuries that happen and the cuts there are woes to it being training camp. However at the same time training camp brings about the anticipation of the upcoming season. The smell of football is in the air as teams and fans prepare themselves for the upcoming season. I love training camp, and at the same time it is one of the most tense times of the years for players coaches, and fans.
