Who will be the Slot Corner?
While I advised last week to not worry about the release of Brandon Flowers (and I’m not saying you should worry now), his release does leave (another) hole in our secondary. Looking at our roster now, I’d have to say that our starters in the secondary will be Cooper and Smith on the outside, Chris Owens in the slot, Berry at one safety, and a combination of Commings and Abdullah at the other.
While Sean Smith was taken out of the starting role due to a DUI, I personally don’t think the Chiefs can keep him out of that starting role. Cooper started on the outside last year even with Flowers playing, and we’ll have to see how he develops. In my opinion, it’d be harder to get much worse than Kendrick Lewis was last year, so the Commings/Abdullah battle should be interesting to watch to see who ends up as the bona fide starter.
My biggest concern is with Chris Owens. I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen him play much if at all. The little film I could find showed off his great speed, but I’m not sure about his coverage skills. Looking at past stats, he seems to be physical as he amassed 2.5 sacks in only 12 games with the Browns last year. It will be interesting to see how he adapts, and if Dorsey and Reid add anyone to compete for that spot.
