TYLER BRAY OR CHASE DANIEL?

The battle between Tyler Bray and Chase Daniel for the final quarterback spot on the roster is going to be one to watch this preseason. This is great news not just because it will make the second half of preseason games far more entertaining but because it means the Chiefs’ quarterback depth has gotten significantly better.

We already know what we’re getting in Daniel as a backup. His upside is limited but he is capable of subbing in for a week or two and winning a game for a team. This is a valuable thing to have in the NFL that cannot be overstated. That is unless you want to go back to the days of Tyler Palko? Didn’t think so.

All of the questions are going to center around Bray and how he’s developed mentally on the field. All indications seem to be he’s been a solid citizen off the field which was a knock on him coming out of Tennessee. The question now is whether he can take what he’s learned the past year and apply it on the field. There is no question he has to physical tools to be a starting quarterback in the NFL but being able to apply his physical talent on the field was something that was in enough doubt that he went undrafted.

We have not seen Bray on a football field since he played the majority of the fourth preseason game in August. He’s gone through practices, film rooms, and quarterback meetings. He’s watched how Smith and Daniel have gone about preparing for games and studying the offense. Now the test begins.

If Bray proves he has grown mentally in the offense and can apply that knowledge on the field then there should be little doubt that he wins the battle for the final quarterback spot. Failure to prove he’s learned the things he’s needed to figure out to be an NFL quarterback then one can expect him to end up in Houston or some other quarterback needy franchise by the beginning of September.
