SAFETY:

Sep 29, 2013; Kansas City, MO, USA; Kansas City Chiefs strong safety Eric Berry (29) deflects a pass intended for New York Giants running back David Wilson (22) during the second half at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs won 31-7. Mandatory Credit: Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Players Currently On The Roster:

Eric Berry (starter)
Husein Abdullah (starter)
Sanders Commings
Malcolm Bronson
Jerron McMillian

Would the Chiefs be okay if they started the season with just the players they currently have?

No. In today’s NFL you need three starting caliber safeties just about as much as you need three dependable CBs. The Chiefs MAY have three starting caliber safeties IF Commings is healthy and lives up to expectations. Depending on that “if” is too risky, especially when one of the starters (Abdullah) is just passable as a starter and you have no backup at SS for Eric Berry.

Would the Chiefs prefer to get an upgraded starter at this position?

Yes. While Abdullah and Commings may be given the chance to win the starting spot I don’t think the Chiefs are done adding players that may compete for that job.

Are the Chiefs in need of adding depth or a long term replacement player at this position?

Yes. Like I said, in addition to needing more competition at FS, they have no real backup for Eric Berry.
