According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, the Kansas City Chiefs will trade for San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith as soon as they are able, when the new league year starts on March 12th.

From Glazer:

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com is confirming the report and is citing a source that the pick is for at least a second-round draft pick.

Wow. This is huge news. I thought this trade was definitely going to happen but I did not think that it would be for a pick as high as a second-rounder.

This means the Chiefs are certainly not going to be taking a QB in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. I would be shocked if they did.

This means Alex Smith is the Chiefs’ guy for the foreseeable future.

UPDATE: Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the deal is for a 2013 2nd-round pick and a conditional mid-round 2014 pick.
