Police have confirmed that Kansas City Chiefs starting MLB Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend today before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and taking his own life in the parking lot.

According to reports, Belcher was confronted in the parking lot by a couple of Chiefs employees, including GM Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel. Belcher reportedly said his goodbyes and thanked the two men for all they had done for him. He then turned and began walking away before shooting himself and ending his life.

The woman Belcher murdered was a girlfriend of around three years. The couple had recently welcomed the birth of a baby girl. The child is reportedly safe and in the custody of her extended family members.

The Chiefs have been in contact with the NFL throughout the day. The team is scheduled to play a game tomorrow at noon central against the Carolina Panthers. Thus far it appears as if the game will still take place. The Panthers are on their way to Kansas City and the league has yet to announce any change to kickoff. That doesn’t mean the situation won’t change, but as of now, the game is still on.

Players from around the league have tweeted out prayers and support to the Chiefs organization. The Oakland Raiders have also released a statement in support of Kansas City.
