The Indianapolis Colts are going to release Peyton Manning today.
Right now, the teams expected to be in the mix are the Washington Redskins, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and of course, the Kansas City Chiefs. With a guy the caliber of Peyton Manning on the market, however, that list might not be exhaustive.
Will the Chiefs get Manning? How long will it take for Manning to decide to sign somewhere? Will he sign before the start of free agency on March 13th? If so, Peyton Manning could be a Chief within a week. Buckle up.
And until then, here is your

The Kansas City Chiefs released veteran linebacker Demorrio Williams on Tuesday, saving the franchise about $2 million in salary cap space before the start of free agency. The 31-year-old Williams joined the Chiefs in 2008 after four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, and eventually became the starter ahead of Derrick Johnson. But he’s been used primarily on special teams the past few seasons as Johnson emerged as a Pro Bowl middle linebacker.

Since 1993, the NFL standard for “it can happen to anyone” has been Joe Montana. The San Francisco 49ers traded Montana, regarded by many as the greatest quarterback of all time, to the Kansas City Chiefs. But Manning was even more unlikely to finish his career on a second team. He has been cut, not traded, which makes it more extreme. While Andrew Luck is regarded as a can’t-miss prospect, he’s hardly as can’t-miss as was Steve Young, who was already playing for the 49ers when they moved Montana.

Playing time would have been tight for Williams next season.Johnson is signed through 2015, and is coming off the best year of his career, setting a franchise record with 179 tackles. He also had two interceptions and two sacks.Jovan Belcher, a restricted free agent, is coming off a breakout season in which he finished second on the team in tackles. Kansas City also has signed Brandon Siler, who missed all of last season after tearing his Achilles in training camp, to a one-year extension.
Kansas City has more pressing needs in the April draft, particularly the offensive and defensive lines. But the Chiefs may also target a linebacker in the later rounds who can supply the same kind of depth and special teams ability as Williams at a fraction of the cost.

Manning could very well end up a Kansas City Chief or a Denver Bronco.Friday, I looked at the reasons why Manning would fit in Kansas City. Meanwhile, in an Insider piece Insider Tuesday, Chris Sprow looks at what type of impact Manning would have in Kansas City. At the combine, Kansas City coach Romeo Crennel indicated the Chiefs would be apt to consider signing Manning if he became available. Well, he will be available by week’s end.
