Franchise Tag Deadline Coming For Bowe, Carr And Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have until 3 p.m. Central time today to use their franchise tag on one of their top free agents-to-be.

There have been reports that the club plans to use the tag on WR Dwayne Bowe, though some fans are hoping that the Chiefs are able to ink Bowe to a long-term deal before today’s deadline so that the team can franchise CB Brandon Carr.

Meanwhile, fans of the Oakland Raiders continue to hold out hope that Scott Pioli will use the tag on safety “Shabby” Sabby Piscitelli.

There isn’t much of an advantage for teams to announcing the tag any earlier than they have to, however that did not stop a number of clubs from announcing their franchise players on Friday.

The delay in Kansas City could mean nothing but it could also mean that the Chiefs are close to a deal with either Bowe or Carr. If the team really wants to retain both players, as they’ve indicated publically, then they need to lock down one of the two in order to franchise the other.

There seems to be a feeling that Carr wants to test the free agent market so it is likely Bowe that the Chiefs are pushing to get signed.

They’ve got about seven hours.
