Kansas City Chiefs head “coach” Todd Haley confirmed today that RB Jamaal Charles will be placed on injured reserve, ending his season.
It is an unfortunate occurrence in an unfortunate season. The Chiefs are now left with “Old Man” Jones, Dexter F. McCluster (the F is for fumbles) and Jackie Battle. Jackie Battle is not worthy of a nickname.
The Chiefs are in hot water at running back. Their whole deal is running a zone blocking scheme so that a quick back like Charles can find a crease. Jones is not quick and McCluster is too small to get significant carries.
The only other option the Chiefs have to run the football is FB Le’Ron McClain. McClain may not be the best fit for the KC blocking scheme, but the Chiefs will just have to adjust. He is at least on the right side of 30, and I’d rather three yards and a cloud of dust than six yards and a fumble with McCluster or one yard and a cloud of dust with Jones.
Hell, if McClain can get three yards on three carries, that is nine yards! That is almost a first down. It would be a big improvement.
Scott Pioli will now have a roster spot to fill, though given his track record, I wouldn’t expect any surprises. He is probably on the phone with Kolby Smith or something.
