Kansas City Chiefs rookie safety Eric Berry was nominated for the NFL’s Rookie of the Week award multiple times this season but each time failed to take home the honor.
So he won Rookie of the Month instead.
According to Josh Looney via Twitter, Berry has just become the first Chiefs defensive rookie ever to win NF: Defensive Rookie of the Month for December and January.
Berry had an excellent season with 92 tackles, 4 interceptions and 1 forced fumble. In December/January he had 31 tackles, 6 pass defenses and 2 interceptions, 1 of which he took back for a 54-yard touchdown.
Berry has shown gradual improvement throughout the year but he has particularly improved in his pass defense. Prior to December, Berry had been credited with only 3 pass defenses all season. He doubled that number over the season’s final 5 weeks.
Congratulations to Eric and let’s hope he keeps it up throughout the playoffs.
