The McNabb Trade: A Play In One Act
KC’s 2nd Round Pick Could Be Valuable to McNabb Suitors With all the rumors swirling around about a possible trade for Donovon McNabb, one teams name that I haven’t seen mentioned is the Kansas City Chiefs. No, I am not suggesting the Chiefs would be interested in trading for McNabb but they may just be the vehicle for another team to get a deal done. The rumor right now is that the Eagles will give up McNabb for a draft pick in the top 42 picks. That would be the 10th pick in the 2nd round and above. I don’t think anyone is going to give up a 1st rounder for McNabb at this point but I do think teams will give up an early 2nd rounder for him. The Chiefs hold the #36 pick in the draft and they are surrounded by QB needy teams. After the jump I will outline a scenario where the Chiefs might be able to get involved in a deal that would move McNabb.
Here is how the first 10 picks in the 2nd round shake out: 1.Rams 2.Lions 3.Bucs 4.Chiefs 5.Redskins 6.Browns 7.Raiders 8.Chargers 9.Bills 10.Bucs The Rams will likely take Bradford so they are out. The Lions have Stafford and the Bucs have Freeman, so they are out. The Chiefs have Cassel so we know they won’t be trading for McNabb. Now look at the teams directly behind KC. The Redskins, Browns, Raiders and Bills all need a QB.
I am going to write a little play for you. Let’s say it is day two of the draft. Chan Gailey calls up the Eagles.

Hi Andy. Listen, are you guys still interested in trading McNabb?
Andy
Sure are.
Chan Gailey
Ok. We’ll give you the 41st pick in the draft for him. What do you say?
Andy
Let me call a few other teams and see if I can get some leverage against you. Call you back in 5.

Chan Gailey just called me and offered the 41st pick for Donovon. I know you guys were interested. Can you beat it?
Mike Shannahan
Well…tell you what. We’ll give you the 37th pick and Larry Johnson. How does that sound?
Andy Reid
That sounds great, except, er…you can keep Larry.
Mike Shannahan
Damn! It was worth a try. God, I am sick of that asshole already! Do you know last night he spit a wine cooler in my wife’s face for no reason? Said she looked at him funny!
Andy Reid
Uh..cool. Listen, Rat Face, I gotta call Chan back. Offer sounds good. I’ll let you know.
Mike Shannahan
Alrighty, I’ll call Mortenson and tell him I am quitting to become an astonaught. $50 bucks says he interrupts the draft coverage on ESPN in…say…8 minutes to report it.
Andy Reid

The Don holds out his hand, adorned with sparkling Super Bowl rings. Chan kisses them all.

Make me an offer I can’t refuse.
Chan Gailey
Well, you see Mr. Pioli, sir, I want to trade for Donovon McNabb. I offered the 41st pick but old Rat Face offered #37.Big Red is going to take Rat Face’s offer unless I can do better. And, well, you have the 36th pick.
Don Pioli
And what will you give me in return?
Chan Gailey
How about our 2nd round pick and Lee Evans?
Don Pioli
And a box of connolis.
Chan Gailey

Don Pioli

All right, my little play here illustrates the type of deal that could go down and how the Chiefs could be involved. I don’t know if the Chiefs could get Lee Evans from the Bills or if that would even be fair compensation (though I wouldn’t mind having Evans as a slot receiver) but a deal could nab the Chiefs an extra 3rd or 4th round pick or possibly an extra pick next season and all for just moving back a few spots in the 2nd round. Don’t forget, the Browns and Raiders are also behind KC and might want to leap frog each other. We all know Pioli likes to trade back. What do you think, Addicts?
