Romeo Crennel Press Conference: Live Updates

Haley on Crennel, a guy “I had great interest in adding to our staff.”

Haley: “I jumped at the opportunity to make him a part of my staff.”

Crennel: “I was able to take a breath last year. … (Haley) was willing to wait however long I needed (last year).”

“I thought it would be a disservice to him to basically have him wait until June. … I decided that I would take that deep breath.”

Haley on Pendergast’s role: “Clancy is part of my staff. … I want Clancy to be part of this staff.”

Haley said he wants Pendergast to continue on the staff in some other role.

To clarify, gary gibbs is staying. Clancy Pendergast remains as well for the time being.

Crennel: “There’s a good young nucleus. We have to improve and add some players, and I think we’re going to start doing that.”

Crennel said the Chiefs will be based in a 3-4 defense but “will not be limited.” Also: “We will mix things up as we need to.”

Crennel: “I was just waiting to see and hoping that I did have an opportunity. I did have it, and Kansas City was one of those.”

Haley: “You need players to win the big game, and you need coaches. You can’t do it with just one or the other.”

Haley said the Chiefs are in the process of working on identifying players for the team to pursue.

Haley: “We’ve got a nice staff and one we’re going to continue to work on.”

Haley said Clancy Pendergast will be coaching a position but wouldn’t specify which.

Haley then indicated that Pendergast would likely remain as the defensive backs coach.

Crennel on his defensive philosophy: “It’s going to be a combination of zone and man going in.”

Crennel said he would “definitely be interested” in being a head coach again.

Pendergast coached DBs last year, specifically the corners, which is where Haley believes Pendergast will coach in 2010

Crennel on rejoining fmr Patriots coworkers: “All of that was really important in my decision to come here and try to build a program.”

Crennel is in Kansas City now, talking with other coaches about players “so I can get a better feel” for the defense.

Haley said, maybe jokingly, that he would put his coaching staff on a fitness program, similar to the one the players are assigned to.
