Chiefs Fix: Tuesday Tidbits

I just found out that Will Shields isn’t the only Chiefs Hall of Famer who’s decided to hang up his Sunday’s best. WeirdWolf, Kansas City Chiefs fan and philanthropist extraordinaire, has also decided to retire in order to spend more time with his family. A founding member of the KC Superfans — an organization of Chiefs fans that has raised millions of dollars for various charities — and a staple at Arrowhead, Weirdwolf will also be sorely missed. In 2002, Weirdwolf was elected to the Pro Football Hall Of Fame Visa Hall of Fans as the Chiefs Fan of the Year for that season. For more information on Weirdwolf visit fellow Superfan X-Factor’s MySpace blog or the Weirdwolf hompage.

ArrowheadPride.com, one of our favorite web destinations, has updated information on round two of the SB Nation Mock Draft. AP’s first-round pick was WR/RS Ted Ginn Jr., who somehow slipped to the 23rd overall pick. AP could make its second-round pick as soon as today, likely a DT.

The silver lining that has come out of Will Shields’ retirement — King Carl has revealed that C Casey Wiegmann will indeed play for the Chiefs in’07. Peterson stated:

“My conversation with Casey Wiegmann is that he has full intention to play in the 2007 season. He’s never mentioned ever to me anything regarding retirement. I’m anticipating he will be our starting offensive center this year. I don’t have any concern that he’s not coming back. I’ve had no information to that from our coaches, our conditioning people.”

Peterson also makes several glowing remarks about Shields and reveals that G John Welbourn is the odds-on favorite to replace Shields.

The KC Star’s Adam Teicher’s latest vlog focuses on Shields’ departure, while his latest article takes a look at the uncertainty that surrounds the Chiefs O-line. Star columnist Joe Posnanski also did a recent piece on Shields. I’m genuinely surprised that Whitlock hasn’t done his obligatory Shields piece yet. What gives? Maybe Jason’s just too involved in the Imus debate?

The other personnel news released today was that the Chiefs have re-signed both DT James Reed and OT Kevin Sampson. Both players will add quality depth to units that were looking a little thin.

I found the following quote from Phins DE Jason Taylor over on Peter King’s Monday Morning QB:

“I think sometimes the media accentuates the negative things, as evidenced by things like Anna Nicole Smith’s passing and the all attention it got. We’ve got people running for president who are making history and it doesn’t get as much attention as the negative things. It’s the same thing in our situation now. The guys who are getting into trouble are getting so much attention, but the guys who are doing things right don’t get a whole lot. There are a ton of guys around this league doing things the correct way, and trying to represent themselves and their organizations and improve the communities. Unfortunately they don’t get the same coverage. Perception becomes reality.”

First the Merriman criticism and now this statement. This guy is on-point right now. He’s the best defensive player in the league and he never acts a fool. Kudos to Taylor, who embodies everything that is right with the NFL. This is precisely what I was getting at in my recent Will Shields piece. Well said, J.T.

In other news, which isn’t really news at all, Trent is still a Chief, Turner is still a Bolt and nobody knows what the hell Al Davis is going to do with the first-overall pick in just a little over ten days.

My brother and one of his best friends, the one and only Mick, have started an online petition to cut overpaid Kansas City Royals DH Mike Sweeney. Nice guy, but on the diamond he’s been a straight bum so far this season. Designated hitters are paid to knock the seams off of the ball, not bat .152. At what he’s getting paid, keeping him around and continuing to pay him just isn’t reasonable. Go sign the petition!

That’s all for now…
