The projected contract amounts from Spotrac have Patrick Mahomes predicted to sign a 4-year, $16.4 million deal with Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs have yet to sign any draft pick to an official contract yet, but given the rookie slotting system, it’s only a matter of time before each draft pick signs for around the projected numbers that Spotrac has released.

Per Spotrac’s numbers, the Chiefs first round pick at No. 10 overall, Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes, is projected to make just over $16.4 million over four years with a team option for a fifth year that comes with each rookie contact under the current collective bargaining agreement. That means Mahomes will not be a free agent until 2022 at least and that’s if the Chiefs don’t use any sort of tag.

The amount that top quarterbacks make now compared to previous years before the slotting system is much lower, but that’s even the case for a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes versus his contemporaries. Mitchell Trubisky was the first QB taken in the draft by the Chicago Bears at No. 2 overall and he will earn nearly twice as much as Mahomes in the first four years in the NFL despite being taken only 8 spots apart. Spotrac projects Trubisky will reel in $29 million in that same time frame with nearly twice as much guaranteed.

Consequently, falling out of the first round entirely cost DeShone Kizer from Notre Dame serious money. The Cleveland Browns finally ended up his fall at No. 52 overall and he will make just under $5 million total for the next four years.
