The Chiefs director of football operations, Chris Ballard accepted an offer to become the new general manager for the Indianapolis Colts.
There is a big hole in the Chiefs’ front office as of Sunday evening. The Chiefs number two position for determining the players on the field is now vacant. Where the Chiefs go from here will need to be rectified soon as possible.
John Dorsey has lost his right-hand man and the Chiefs organization has lost a loyal and dedicated executive. The move is a boon to the Colts franchise and is a definite loss for the Chiefs organization. It is a tough turn of events to lose Ballard to another AFC Team, especially one with a franchise quarterback on board already. Ballard could make The Colts relevant quickly.
Dorsey will have to move quickly find a suitable candidate to replace Ballard. The early favorites would have to be the two in-house candidates. Chiefs currently have co-directors of player p[ersonnel in Mike Borgonzi and Brett Veach. Having reported to Ballard, the two are well-versed in the team’s philosophy and process of evaluating prospects. Look for one to emerge in the near future as a candidate to replace Ballard.
Dorsey is well connected in the football ranks and well respected around the league. He has a number of connections that could be candidates as well. The bottom line is that the Chiefs need to have the director of football operations in place prior to the combine in order to maintain continuity of this offseason’s preparations.
